Abstract

First-year students' causal analysis of the September 11 attacks l to a thought of English majors' thinking about war in an undergraduate Shakespeare course. The analysis of their replys to short surveys was based in succession categories of students' intellectual exhibition and classical ideas of tragic catharsis. From students' definitions of "war" and interpretations of metaphors, a propos process of relieving anxiety emerged: assess students' thinking on a series of rich literary clauses and some movement can be encourageed along Baxter Magolda's observed continuum of critical notion from absolute towards contextual.
