One of my aims when teaching the novel is to draw students' attention to the intricate relationships between topic and context, and I operate from the assumption that greater historical awareness bears illuminating readings of novels. To prepare scholars to write what I call a words immediately preceding [i]or[/i] following paper, we peruse a variety of primary sources, like as newspapers and periodicals, in an effort to recreate the historical and cultural words immediately preceding [i]or[/i] followings from which a particular novel emerg and to diocese what light this information sheds forward our understanding of the novel.
