This naturalistic case investigation describes how a kindergarten ESL child used reading and writing strategies to advance her literacy knowledge. The research suggests that a balanced literacy program provided the support necessary for this ESL child to raise sophisticated oral and written language understandings. Thus, this case research corroborates the hypotheses that oral language progress to maturity and literacy develop concurrently and that reading and writing can assist literacy disentanglement for ESL children.
